Image used with permission by copyright holder I’m especially puzzled as to why using a keyboard to sign in to an account is a problem, but using it as a core tool in another game is fine. Another note says that the game “displays compatibility warnings when running on Steam Deck, but runs fine,” which doesn’t seem like much of an issue compared to some of the issues I bumped up against in Strange Horticulture. That’s more or less the only knock against it. When I expand the compatibility details, I’m told the game requires use of a keyboard if I want to log into my Square Enix account. Even so, it has a yellow label indicating that the game will work on the device, but may need some workarounds. It aced its benchmark test when I ran it and was generally a natural experience in handheld mode. Shadow of the Tomb Raider runs especially smooth on the device. It’s clear that the game hasn’t been optimized for Steam Deck, but what baffles me is why it received verified status while some other games I’ve played have a second-tier “playable” label instead. Luckily, the game features an “auto-label” option, though using it takes away some of the satisfaction and limits how players can create labels. The Steam Deck’s keyboard is so cumbersome that typing out plant names took three times as long on the handheld as it would have on a PC. I had to squint to see location names on the map or read tiny dialogue options. The text is ridiculously tiny across the board when viewed on a s7-inch screen. It’s a fantastic deduction game, but one I wish I hadn’t played on Steam Deck. On top of all that, there’s a puzzle element where players find locations on a map using a set of letters and clues they receive through the game. Once a plant has been identified correctly, players can attach a label to it and type in the correct name. To do so, they’ll have a few tools, like a plant guide with a page detailing each one’s properties. The core gameplay loop is that customers request specific plants and players need to correctly identify it from rows of unlabeled plants. In Strange Horticulture, players run a plant shop while trying to solve an occult mystery. This fantasy Minesweeper roguelite is my new Steam Deck buddy I sent a reptilian to space in Steam’s weirdest, wildest new game After four months with the ROG Ally, I’m going back to my Steam Deck

He rattled off the names as readily and matter-of-factly as if I had asked him if the sun was shining. He walked with me through my garden and told me the names of all of my existing plants, even he rare ones with both their common as well as their botanical names : "This is a Dombeya Wallichii " "That is a Dizygotheca" etc etc etc for every single plant in my garden. He was also the founder/director of the Xeriscape Water Conservation Program at UCI. He's a walking encyclopedia ! He explained to me that he taught and was the founder and program director of the Landscape Technologies Program at Cal Poly University Pomona for 24 years. An interesting thing about him is his knowledge of horticulture. Wayne is a pleasure to work with, very easygoing, not pushy, and he's prompt. Now I can set about to obtain everything and create my dream patio environment at my own pace, and according to my budget. This was all for a surprisingly reasonable one-time price. The following week he brought to me a professionally drafted design for my space, complete with a variety recommended plants, pots, furniture, fountain and the best places to get them. I wanted not only plants but furniture, a fire pit, and a fountain. I wanted not only plant advice but also someone who could help me design the space. I found "My Garden" on and I feel lucky I did. But I have no knowledge of plants, which plants would look good, which plants would survive best, and which would require not too much water. I have a rather large tiled patio space in the back and wanted to do something special with it. We are now left with the unfortunate realization that we have run out of yard space for Katie to transform and we will miss working with her. After the job is completed, she follows up with visits to check on the landscaping and problem solve any issues. She is on site for all critical decisions and manages the project to completion to ensure that her design is implemented according to her vision and our satisfaction. She is particularly effective working with the contractors during installation. The result is a cool design that looks original to our Midcentury Modern house. She also designed a privacy panel for the front porch using vintage glass blocks that she was able to find. After listening to our particular needs and desires she created a unique design that exceeded our expectations. She is a creative, knowledgable and responsive professional. Katie once again proved to be just the right choice for the job. So when we decided to rid our front yard of its lawn and use drought tolerant landscaping, we knew who to call. We continue to love her design and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the landscape as it has matured. “We were fortunate to have Katie Cool redesign the landscape in our backyard two years ago. In real time, it can be challenging to control tone to ensure that it matches your intent. When speaking, tone includes volume, projection, and intonation as well as word choice. A poorly chosen word with unclear or negative connotations can quickly lead to misunderstanding. A well-chosen word with a positive connotation creates good will and trust. Tone can be an especially important factor in workplace disagreements and conflict. As with other nonverbal cues, your tone can add power and emphasis to your message, or it can undermine it entirely. How you say something can be just as important as what you say. At worst, it can undermine your message and your team’s confidence in you, your organization, and even in themselves. At best, conflicting verbal and nonverbal communication can cause confusion. Your nonverbal cues must, at all times, support your message. If you are aware of others’ body language, you may be able to adjust your communication tactics appropriately.Īt the same time, leaders must also be able to control their own nonverbal communications. Leaders must be especially adept at reading nonverbal cues.Įmployees who may be unwilling to voice disagreements or concerns, for instance, may show their discomfort through crossed arms or an unwillingness to make eye contact. And we are more likely to believe the nonverbal signals over spoken words if the two are in disagreement. Nonverbal cues can have between 65 and 93 percent more impact than the spoken word. Our facial expressions, gestures, and body language can, and often do, say more than our words. Consider how you will respond to questions and criticisms. Research the information you may need to support your message. Preparation also involves thinking about the entirety of the communication, from start to finish. However, being prepared means more than just practicing a presentation. Know what you are going to say and how you are going to say before you begin any type of communication. Repeating your message can ensure that your audience receives it, but too much repetition can cause them to tune you out entirely. It will also help you eliminate irrelevant details.Īvoid unnecessary words and overly flowery language, which can distract from your message.Īnd while repetition may be necessary in some cases, be sure to use it carefully and sparingly. Outlining carefully and explicitly what you want to convey and why will help ensure that you include all necessary information. The key to powerful and persuasive communication-whether written or spoken-is clarity and, when possible, brevity.īefore engaging in any form of communication, define your goals and your audience. And when it comes to word choice, less is more. Be clear and conciseĬommunication is primarily about word choice. These eight tips can help you maximize your communication skills for the success of your organization and your career. The good news is that these skills can be learned and even mastered. The only notable shortcut can be found along the U-turn at the beginning of the track. It is also the only Wii track to not feature any hazards, in any of its iterations, that make racers spin out or flip over. The aforementioned sidewalk to the left of the track also continues past the finish line until the U-turn at the beginning of the track.ĭaisy Circuit is one of only two Wii tracks to not feature any moving course parts, the other being Luigi Circuit. There is then a gradual left turn and racers reach the finish line. Afterwards, the track greatly narrows again, though there is another elevated sidewalk to the left of it, and racers take another brief straightaway. Additionally, racers have the option to drive onto an elevated sidewalk on the outside of the U-turn, with a lone Item Box at both ends of the sidewalk. On the inside of this turn is more traffic cones and the start of the turn contains the last item set. Here the track greatly narrows and there is a brief straightaway until racers reach a lighthouse there is first a slight left followed by a sharp U-turn to the right around the lighthouse and then another slight left. They take a right turn and then serpentine as they take a slight left turn and exit the tunnel. Racers then enter a tunnel with a low ceiling and more traffic cones, along with Miis which cheer for racers. On either side of the second fountain is another set of Item Boxes. Daisy and Baby Daisy are replaced by female Mii heads, while Luigi and Baby Luigi are changed to male Mii heads. When the player is playing as a Mii, the heads of the fountains will be replaced by Mii heads. A statue is on top of each fountain one is of Daisy and Luigi, and the other is of Baby Luigi and Baby Daisy. There is then a figure-8 shaped section where two large circular fountains occupy the middle of the track and racers must go left or right around both. Here there is a gradual U-turn to the right the road constantly zigzags along this turn and features traffic cones. Racers then enter a town where Toads, Piantas, Boos and Sledge Bros. It begins with a very slight left turn followed by the first set of Item Boxes. The course takes place in a small town near the ocean at sunset, and the Daisy Cruiser can be seen in the background, but with a gray exhaust pipe instead of an original one.

If you do go this route, be sure to rinse the cup thoroughly before recycling it. Paper: In our collective effort to reduce our use of single-use paper and plastic, you'll want to only opt for to-go espresso cups when necessary.Double-walled: In a double-walled espresso cup, your hot drink sits within a layer of borosilicate glass that's protected by another exterior layer of glass to prevent your hands from burning.Porcelain: While porcelain does tend to shatter upon forceful impact, it’s microwave- and dishwasher-safe and considered to be the OG when it comes to drinking espresso.Stainless-steel: As one of the most durable materials you can find, stainless-steel allows espresso cups to withstand the rigors of heavy handling or accidents.Stackable: Stackable espresso cups are designed to nest within or on top of one another to reduce clutter in your pantry and prevent your espresso cups from going rogue.Until they set up shop stateside, you’ll be better off calling around to your local eco-friendly, package-free store to see if they have any in stock. There are several different styles of espresso cups to consider when selecting a set of them. The other downside is that these ship from the UK, which is obviously not eco-friendly. Still, if it ever cracks (like my old one, after two years), you can break it down, boil it, then throw the cup in your compost pile. The big bonus of these used to be that they were biodegradable, but because of new UK regulations (it must biodegrade 90% in six months) they can no longer claim that. I previously bought one three years ago and never had a problem with the materials affecting the taste of my coffee. While the rest of these mugs are made out of stainless steel and glass, Ecoffee’s cups are made out of sustainably harvested bamboo (with the lids and sleeves made of silicone). (Alex Lauer) Most Sustainable: Ecoffee Cup 14oz Will you regret the expense? Sorry, can’t hear you over the espresso machine.īUY IT HERE: $18 This black and white mug is simple, but one look at Ecoffee’s website and you’ll see why they win for eccentric designs. Plus, you can use it for iced drinks, too! Is it the most expensive option on this list? Yes. Also, my partner borrowed it for a day and said, after keeping it on her desk for a long time, that she almost burned her mouth because her latte was “still crazy hot” (direct quote). I love the handle for stability (but some may see that as a downside if you need to fit it in your car cupholder). It doesn’t make your drink taste like plastic. The stainless steel cup and insulated lid are easy to clean. The “soft touch finish,” as the company calls it, does feel noticeably better. Hydro Flask already won me over on the water-bottle front, and this mug has everything I could ask for in a coffee mug (and plenty I wouldn’t have thought to ask). Unprompted barista comment: “I like your mug.” This color Hydro Flask calls “olive,” but the insulated mug is also available in black, Pacific, stone and watermelon.(Alex Lauer) Best Overall: Hydro Flask 12 oz Coffee Mug Below, find to-go mugs from KeepCup, Klean Kanteen, JOCO, Ecoffee and Hydro Flask, each categorized by the type of coffee drinker it suits best. We’re drinking cocktail-level espresso with vanilla, coriander bitters and black Hawaiian sea salt (that’s a real recipe from this test).Īfter many, many $6 lattes, we’ve found a winner. When it comes to French coffee or café au lait, it is often enjoyed in a specific coffee mug which is known as bol. But today’s coffee drinkers aren’t drinking straight black coffee. Why are people not talking about the difference? If one wanted to simply dump an entire pot of coffee into a container and keep it warm all day, we’d use the trusty Stanley thermoses that previous generations used on the farm and in the factory. These are one of the best insulated cups that you can at a decent price range. But unlike other rankings you’ll see out there, we’re talking about a very specific kind of to-go cup: one for handcrafted espresso drinks. Our Top Pick: JoyJolt Savor The Best Espresso Cups Set After reviewing a number of products in the espresso cups category, our top choice is the JoyJolt Savor double-walled glasses. How do we know this? We just spent the last three weeks testing five of the best reusable coffee mugs on the market. Individually made from domestic stoneware clay and uniquely spotted with brown manganese specks, each set comes coated in a food-safe glaze for an extra layer of texture and elegance. Oh, and they’ll gain you points in one of the most important relationships in your life - the one with your barista. Best Artisanal: Self-taught potter Yuko Nishikawa throws these pear-shaped espresso cups by hand in her Brooklyn -based studio. They’re less wasteful ( as long as you use them more than 20-100 times), they keep your drink hotter (or colder!) and you don’t need one of those little cardboard sleeves to not burn your hand like Harry in Home Alone. If you visit a coffee shop more than once a month, you need a reusable mug. Nota bene: If you buy through the links in this article, we may earn a small share of the profits. That's the reason people continue to go, of course. The views are seriously fantastic - you can see around the entire city from there. As we did, we found one more line where we could wait for the elevator to go back down. We waited our turn for the open windows, got our pictures, hung out for a bit to make the long wait worth our while, and headed back down the stairs. That meant that people were crowding around the open ones in an area that should have had enough windows for every person there. When we were there, there were only four windows open out of the 24 available. You can see through and take pictures through them, but they won't come out too well. Unfortunately, most are locked shut with smudged plexiglass windows. At the top, you'll find that there are windows all around you with amazing views of the city. There is only one elevator, it only holds 8 people at a time, and it takes an eternity for the elevator make a round trip to the top of the tower and back. We got to the elevator finally, and figured out why the line was taking so long. It was different bits of San Franciscan history and culture, and it helped to break up the monotony of standing in a line for the better part of an hour. The murals on the walls inside the tower were pretty interesting. We'd already walked up the hill and wanted to get a good view out of it, so we bought our tickets - $8 each - and waited in line. We asked if there were stairs we could take, but apparently the stairs are for emergency use only. The two of us stepped inside were informed that there would be a 45 minute wait to take the elevator to the top - on a Tuesday afternoon. If you opt not to go up the tower, you'll need to climb through a few bushes to get decent city views. They've let tall shrubs and trees grow up around the top of the hill, making it so that the tower itself is the only spot up there with great views. My first issue with Coit Tower isn't the tower itself, but the grounds. I thought it was quite pretty from the outside, like a marble column overlooking the city. It's up at the top of Telegraph Hill, and we walked up there from Chinatown to get a good view of the city. Perhaps I'm being overly harsh here, but I think that Coit Tower is the most skippable landmark in San Francisco. |
